Long time no insignificant blog full of drivel, reader(s). lul. Prepare for a small dose of total idiocy, mostly inspired by the many posts of delicious thought food by Eddy (http://smokyham.blogspot.com/).
So, faith. We act upon it everyday, really. Everytime we leave our homes, we are really acting on faith that things are safe. No one's going to shank us on our doorstep, or something. Everytime we try something new, do something we haven't done, we're really taking a stab in the dark. What will happen? We don't know for sure, but we're pretty sure this will happen, or that will happen. Like a complex chemistry experiment. You've got your hypothesis all jazzed up, and you think that will occur, but you can't know for sure it won't, and vice versa.
Same goes with our societal heirarchy. Us, and the government. It's not so relevant to any of us yet, but we put faith in our government not to fuck up the country and make enemies with big people like the USA that're packing a gajillion nukes to pop us to next Tuesday, and then some.
We do all that pretty easily. We assume our faith is well placed, and can happily get on with things. We can get on with living the life that our government's made possible for us. We can continue that experiment, assuming we're right and we know exactly what will happen.
So why is it so hard for many of us to put that same faith in God, or a god, or gods, or aliens? Why do we scoff when we're told, 'Seek and you shall find. Believe and He/it will come to you,' or some other such religious statement? All we have to do is put faith in this big/small dude/dudette above/around/inside/below us, and they'll reveal themselves to us. We'll finally understand the visions and revelations all these other people are having.
There's the problem, though. The variables. The unknowns. 'I can't see it, how does it exist? Why should I believe?'
There are plenty of reasons we're given why, and any number of those can be left to us to accept or not. But here's a thought... if it really doesn't exist, what harm is there in putting a little faith in it? Especially in this case, in terms of religion. I'll use Christianity for the example. Why can we not believe in God, whether or not He exists? We can still get on with our lives the way they were before placing that faith in Him, it's not like it'll make a huge difference.
We have nothing to lose from believing, yet if what the churches preach is true, then we have a fuckload of things to gain. Not directly quoting there.
So, why is it so hard? I haven't posed all the possibilities for why this might be. There are heaps of other reasons. We've all got our own.
Anyways, time to sleep. Done this with half a functioning brain. My other half shrivelled and died.

Very interesting to gain insight into the inner workings of your mind, once again.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention I love your brain? :D

I wish it was a more active-than-usual brain.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see this was interesting in some way.
